Camp Nuhop
404 Hillcrest Dr.
Ashland, OH 44805

Jerry Dunlap — counselor, friend, confidant, encourager, giver of hugs and wet willies, husband, father and brother to many beyond his immediate family, hero, and mentor, died May 30, 2008 at the Cleveland Clinic. Five years after his diagnosis with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension, Jerry’s passing came as a shock to his immediate family and the extended community of Camp Nuhop that Jerry served for nearly 35 years. Jerry, with his wife, Terrie, founded Camp Nuhop in 1974, which later grew into the Nuhop Center for Experiential Learning, of which Jerry served as Executive Director.

Jerry Dunlap dedicated his life and career to helping and counseling others. He changed thousands of lives by giving people his trust, sometimes listening to people at their highest and lowest points, and yes, sometimes exercising tough love. Jerry taught that all children, indeed all people, are lovable and capable, deserving of respect, and worthy of trust. Jerry lifted people up to feel better about themselves, and we all felt loved in his presence.

The thousands of campers and staff who attended Camp Nuhop will remember Jerry in their own way. Collectively, we will remember Jerry singing ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ during Songfest, which closed every Camp session, and the hugs he gave and received as we all sang along. We remember Jerry singing his favorite funny camp song, ‘Cold Spaghetti’, as he walked around the dining hall to find the perfect ear from which to pull an imaginary strand of cold, sticky, spaghetti. He would sing in a bellowing voice, with a playful but grossed-out look on his face, ‘Do you find it in his ear?’, and the whole dining hall would sing in response ‘Yes, you find it in his ear!!’, and on and on finding cold spaghetti in hair, under arms, in noses, and toes. We remember Jerry leading us through HIS favorite activity, the Malabar Swamp Hike. He would don his red bandanna, instruct us to tape our fingers together into fins, and would take us back to the primordial ooze, as we slid as bravely as possible into the warm swamp. Even Jerry could not hide his own surprise, discomfort, startles and giggles when an unknown creature brushed by his leg under the invisible swamp water. Swampy, muddy, wet, and cold were always Jerry’s specialties, and no Camp Nuhop day was too rainy or damp to go tubing in the river, swimming at the lake, or hiking through Mohican State Park. Jerry taught campers and staff to enjoy everything nature has to offer including rainy days, rotten logs, and the still quiet of a starry night. Passing by us in the dining hall, or after morning swim, Jerry would stop and talk, ask what we were going to do that day, give us hugs, and high fives, and tease us in his gentle, playful, way. The accumulation of these brief encounters reinforced in us that Jerry believed that each person was worthy of attention; that he took the time, so often, to just catch up, gave all of us a sense of value. We also remember Jerry when he sat down with us face to face to talk about tough love. Even the times when we had to leave Camp Nuhop we left with Jerry’s hug, and his arm around our shoulder.

The last night of camp in-service, the week-long training period before camp started, the Camp Nuhop Magic always came alive. In the evening, after dark, Jerry would lead the staff into the woods, to a clearing beyond Cabin 6. There we would sit in a circle around a small campfire, and Jerry would take from behind a log an imaginary kettle. Jerry described the kettle as dark, well-worn, and filled with the dreams, gifts, joys, and struggles of campers and staff who had come before. The Magic Kettle was all-consuming and all-giving and included the best of the Camp Nuhop spirit. Passing the kettle with great care, we would each take from the Magic Kettle what we needed and gave to it what we could offer or what we wanted to leave behind. The Magic Kettle made its way back to Jerry, and we all waited in anticipation of what our leader would take and put into the Magic Kettle. We hung on his every word.

On that last night of great anticipation for the arrival of our campers, we would reflect on what Jerry taught us and what in turn we could teach others. It was always Jerry’s way to teach and give and encourage and expect campers and counselors to become more than they thought they could be. He empowered us to trust in others as he trusted in us, and to make our world a better place much as he left his world. As we remember our friend Jerry, we hope the Magic Kettle will take all of our grief that he is gone, but give back all the joy he had for life, and the inspiration he has given all of us to make a difference in the lives of others.

Message: Jerry was a "One of A Kind" person.
My son/nephew attended Camp Nuhop for many summers during the late 80's & early 90's while growing up & loved the freedom of expression & unique outdoor activities.
Jerry was a strong advocate in assuring Sponsorships getting attained for the kids who couldn't afford going to the Camp otherwise. I remember Jerry being involved in every aspect of the Camp organization.
It is a relief to know that Jerry's spirit & wishes live on in the lives of many kids. Thank you.

Message: I started out as a camper at Camp Nuhop & always had a WONDERFUL time. As I got older, I attended the Leadership Camp offered by Camp Nuhop. Jerry interviewed me & hired me on as 1 of the Junior Counselors-in-Training, shortly after that. I served in that capacity for the summers of 2000 & 2001. I assisted the counselors w' swimming lessons & other daily camper activities. I SO loved the kids, being w' them, & sharing in their joys while they were at camp. I miss them still, as well as Camp Nuhop. Jerry would always be there, to talk w' me & others. He had a very big heart & was a very kind man. He was always there for people, & understanding of us. I will truly miss Camp Nuhop, as well as Jerry. It was/is a place I have very fond memories of, & a special place I'll always remember in my heart. Thank you Camp Nuhop & Jerry, especially for allowing me to work w' all of the wonderful kids. Thanks again.

Message: I can still remember the time when our group walked to the edge of a swamp. Jerry walked into the swamp; waist deep. There he stood, by himself. As he was talking to us...he bent to reach for something. As he stood back up, one could see a root in his hand. I can remember him cleaning it by dunking it into the swamp, and using his shirt to dry it. After awhile he asked if anyone would taste this root. Well, I had waited to see if anyone else would raise their hands;no one did. So..I did. I am glad that I was given that opportunity; to have it now as a memory of Jerry.

I was saddened to read about Jerry dying.

Sorry for your loss.

I have been going ever since I was wee little and have been going ever sience. Alot of the younger kids that come to camp now, look up to me because of the oppoturnties ive been given to go to camp. Without Jerry's vison for Camp Nuhop, I don't know what type of state I would be in today. He will be greatly missed.

Message: Working for Jerry at Camp Nuhop was the best and most rewarding job I have ever had in my entire life. Kids who are used to being yelled at and ridiculed are recognized and receive awards every day. My favorite Nuhop memories are of standing the Camper (beaming with pride) on a milk crate and talking about their accomplishments during the week. Jerry's vision was--and continues to be ingenious... I miss him so much. He changed so many of our lives for the better. His amazing kids and beautiful wife continue his legacy.

Thank God for people like Jerry and his wife, Terrie. Without them, kids like my Sandy would have nothing to look forward to every year. I'm so sad that he's gone.

Message: I was a counselor at Camp Nuhop back in the late 80's and early 90's. Jerry Dunlap was and remains a hero of mine. I have been a coach and teacher for 20 years now. I have met some great people who have done great things for kids. No one has done more than Jerry. What made Jerry special is that his passion was to help those that were a little different. He would say they are "unique". He said on more than one occasion that maybe the best Camp Nuhop could do was to give a kid one great week in their lives. He did that and so much more over the years.

Thank God or Jerry Dunlap and his family. He will live on through his camp and continue to help others for years to come.

Message: As my husband an I were riding our motorcycle around Ohio yesterday, we saw the signs pointing out the way to Camp Nuhop and it brought back some found memories so I decided to look up the web site. I was saddened to find that Jerry had passed away nearly one year ago. I worked at Camp Nuhop in the summer of 1983 I believe. I had one of the best summers of my life working for Jerry and Terry. My cousin John Liderbach told me about the camp and we worked together. Jerry and Terry made the camp so much fun for everyone. He really knew how to make everyone feel good about themselves. Terry, Trever, Tyler and Tara, you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Message: I came to Nuhop as a new counselor in 1982. I was not really sure of myself in a camp setting and at the time was not sure I wanted a career in education. Jerry's leadership qualities and enthusiasm for children made the summer a valuable one. I have worked at other types of camps since then but none was able to match up to Nuhop. Thanks Jerry and Terrie and family for the memories.
